Help NSPCC Childline win a £4million partnership with Superdrug

Posted on

You can help NSPCC Childline be Superdrug’s next charity partner – worth at least £4 million over 4 years!NSPCC Logo

All you need to do is vote NSPCC on their Facebook page and share with your friends today. Your vote will support NSPCC’s goal to be there for every child who needs help from Childline.

Vote for the NSPCC

Right now Childline can only answer 3 out of every 4 children who contact Childline, but with your support this can change. Winning this partnership would allow NSPCC Childline to answer 1 million children and young people who desperately need their help, giving them someone to turn when they need it the most.

Superdrug’s support over the next four years could make a huge difference to children, and really help NSPCC Childline let young people know that there is somewhere to turn when times are hard.

Vote for the NSPCC

Make sure you vote today – it’s only open until the 21st of August and your vote means NSPCC Childline will be in with the running to be shortlisted for the main vote in December this year.

Together, we can win a partnership that will give hope, change attitudes and keep a generation safer.

Flaw in the Law Fixed!

Posted on

NSPCC_Illustration_Gavel

Thanks to you, police can now protect thousands of children across the UK from online grooming.

In October 2014, the NSPCC launched Flaw in the Law, a campaign to call for a clear new offence that would make it always illegal for an adult to send a child a sexual message.

When the NSPCC launched the campaign, over 80% of people said this should be illegal, while 3 out of 4 adults thought it already was (YouGov, October 2014).

Over 50,000 individuals signed a petition and wrote to the Minister for Online Child Protection calling for a new law.

And thanks to this, the Government listened.

At a major global summit in December 2014 about online safety, the Prime Minister announced that the UK would introduce such a law.

The law was passed as part of the Serious Crime Act (2015). It’s now a criminal offence for an adult to send a sexual message to a child.

However, because the law wasn’t given a start date, police couldn’t charge people with the offence in England and Wales.

Together, we asked Liz Truss to start the law and she finally listened.

It wasn’t easy, but by putting pressure on Government the NSPCC and its supporters has made sure thousands of children will be protected from sexual abuse every year with the anti-grooming law becoming enforceable from April 2017.

“Children should be as safe online as they are offline, wherever they are in the UK. This law will give police in England and Wales the powers they need to protect children from online grooming, and to intervene sooner to stop abuse before it starts.” -Peter Wanless- NSPCC Chief Executive

Help the NSPCC to continue to make the internet a safe place for children, and make sure children get the right support after abuse.

Record Breaking £198,000 Raised for ChildLine at #WHB17

Posted on

A record-breaking £198,000 was raised for Childline at the annual WhiteHat Ball which took place at London’s Lancaster Hotel on Friday 27 January.

As more young people are turning to Childline for help about issues they are encountering online the support given to the charity by the information security industry is becoming increasingly relevant. Last year there were 11,253 Childline counselling sessions carried out with children and young people about online issues such as sexual abuse, bullying and safety.

Speaking after the ball, chairman of this year’s WhiteHat Ball committee, Clive Room said:

“Yet again the WhiteHat Ball has raised an amazing amount of money for a cause we are deeply passionate about. Thanks to all of those involved in making it happen, our sponsors and those who attended, donated and gave so generously.”

“I’m extremely proud to be part of an industry which has made such a difference to so many young lives over the past 12 years.”

Childline president, Dame Esther Rantzen, who also attended the event, said:

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to Clive, the WhiteHat Ball committee and the information security and risk industry for their support over the last 12 years. The money they’ve raised will help to make sure we can be there for every young person when they need us the most.

“At Childline we’ve become more aware of the dangers of the online world and it’s wonderful to have the support of an industry which is determined to keep the internet safe.”

The WhiteHat Ball would not be possible without the support of the information security community and we the committee would like to personally thank each and every one of you for your generosity and support over the last 12 years. This support has enabled us to raise in excess of £1.2 million for the NSPCC’s Childline services which is quite phenomenal!

Thanks again to our 2017 headline sponsor KPMG for helping to make #WHB17 possible and to our event sponsors: Fujitsu, Symantec, Barclay Simpson, (ISC)², CyberArk, Palo Alto and Qualys

We look forward to seeing you all at the next WhiteHat Ball, date to be announecd shortly, and don’t forget to keep an eye on our website for other events and fundraising opportunities throughout the year.

#WHB17 Menu Sneak Peak

Posted on

Not long to go now before we all meet up at The Lancaster in our finery on the 27th .

To whet your appetites for what’s to come, I thought I might give you a sneak preview of the delicious menu. The first course is a trio of choices which we’ve put together on one plate because we couldn’t decide between them. It’s a Tian of confit duck leg with cucumber and spring (a very posh twist on the crispy duck pancakes of old) with a red onion and Somerset brie tart and the hotel’s famous, house smoked salmon.

dinner-table

The main course this year is Horseradish and parsley topped beef, shiitake & chestnut mushrooms, gratin potatoes, savoy cabbage, baby onions, root vegetables and a port jus.

Finally, as in previous years, we have chosen two puddings and will serve five of each to every table of ten. That way you can choose between you in your couples or make a new friend by sharing with the person next to you! These are a milk chocolate opera cake with peanut butter, chocolate fondant and raspberry sorbet or a passion fruit and white chocolate cheesecake with blood orange sorbet. It’s mouth-wateringly magnificent.

underground

I should make you aware that Lancaster Gate Tube will be closed when you come to the ball but plenty of other stations such as Queensway and Paddington are very close by. Forewarned is forearmed so that you don’t get a nasty surprise on the day.

I’m looking forward to seeing you all on the 27th.

Kindest regards

Three Week Countdown to #WHB17

Posted on Updated on

Happy New Year to you all. I can’t believe that Christmas has come and gone so quickly and here we are in 2017 already.

As we are now in the countdown to this year’s White Hat Ball I thought it might be a good idea to run through some of the arrangements for people who are coming for the first time.

The champagne drinks reception will start from 6.30pm in the Nine Kings Suite when you will have an opportunity to mix and mingle with the other guests, buy raffle tickets for the draw later on in the evening and buy this year’s lapel pin. It’s also a chance to examine some of the lots on display for the silent and live auctions.

The dress code is black tie. Don your best dinner jacket, ball gown or snappy cocktail dress and don’t forget to bring your dancing shoes!”

The hotel does take cards but It’s always a good idea to have cash on you as well. Especially for things like raffle tickets. As the hotel reception is undergoing a major refurbishment at present, there isn’t a cash machine in the hotel, so stock up before you come or you’ll have to walk to the two or three minutes to Spring Street for ATMs.

I look forward to seeing you on the 27th January 2017.

Kindest regards

Your Invite from the Chairman: Have You Booked Your Table?

Posted on

On 27th of January, the 12th White Hat Ball will take place at The Lancaster Hotel and kick off a new year of fundraising for ChildLine and Barnardos. What began as a few people looking for a way to put something back, has grown into a munificent leviathan that has raised over a million pounds for good causes.

childline_ball_hero

The White Hat Ball is now a major event in the annual calendar for the information security industry. Its two main purposes are to raise money for charity and to host an event where like-minded people can have a thoroughly good time.

Upon arrival, there is a champagne reception to break the ice before a fabulous gourmet meal with wine. We are usually honoured by the presence of Dame Esther Rantzen who helps remind everyone of the very important support that ChildLine provides every year for thousands of children who suffer abuse or neglect.

After dinner and a live auction, the 650 guests can trip the light fantastic, dancing to a live band until the early hours. The White Hat Ball is living proof that you can have a great night and do your bit for a good cause at the same time.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to join us at our next ball. Many people buy their own individual tickets to the ball, others come as guests of various security companies who buy corporate tables for the evening. Whilst this is an event inspired by and attended by members of the information security industry, as well as their partners and their friends, it is not part of a conference or seminar. This is first and foremost a social event but the fact that most attendees work within the same industry means that we know each other. Thus the White Hat ball has become a major annual reunion for so many of us and of course an important fundraiser for ChildLine.

You can reserve your place at the ball by contactingsarah.jeffery@nspcc.org.uk or calling Sarah on; 020 3772 9423 . I sincerely hope that you will join us and discover for yourself what a great night the White Hat Ball has become.

Kind regards
